Remove Mold From Fabric

Remove mold from fabric.

Oxygen bleach is color safe but should not be used on wool silk or leather. Apply a mold stain remover such as household soap white vinegar or bleach and use a toothbrush to brush off the surface mold. To remove mildew from fabrics mix lemon juice and salt to make a loose paste. If you re working with a white fabric dab hydrogen peroxide onto the stain allow it to set for 15 minutes and then wash as normal.

Be gentle and try not to damage the fabric in the process. Sprinkle a little salt on the fabric for extra effectiveness. If stains remain scrub the area and then reapply more bleach and water solution. Bleach is the most effective way to remove mold and mildew from clothing.

Set your washing machine to the hottest water setting allowed for the specific fabric and let the washer drum begin to fill with water. Add 1 4 cup laundry detergent and 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar to the water. If you choose to pre treat the stain you can gently scrub away at the fabric with a clean toothbrush and any of the cleaning solutions below. Wash at the hottest temperature possible.

You will still need to launder afterwards to kill the mould spores. If the fabric is tough like cotton or denim you can try gently scrubbing off the mould with a clean toothbrush and the selected product. Wet the moldy areas with plain water and then the bleach and water solution and allow it to work for several minutes. Let the stain dry in the sun or pre soak it again this depends on the type of fabric.

Since mold stains are hard to remove you should also pre soak your stained garment before washing it. Let the fabric dry in the sun rinse it before laundering it as the normal way. Sunlight is great at removing mould from fabric but it can also fade colours and damage delicate fabrics. Let your clothes soak in a solution of one cup of white vinegar in a bucket of water for about an hour.

Apply the mixture to the affected fabric scrub gently and then wash and dry your fabric as usual. Lemon juice is always considered as the most traditional method for cleaning. After soaking wash the clothes with laundry detergent in your washing machine to wash away the mold and vinegar. Use a clean toothbrush to scrub away at the mould.

If the mold lightens move to another area. Oxygen bleach like oxiclean or biokleen oxygen bleach plus is chemically different from liquid chlorine bleach but also effectively eliminates mold stains from clothes and other fabrics. You might need to repeat the process to remove all the traces of mold and any moldy smell from your clothes. White vinegar kills mold and mildew while removing any lingering musty odors.

Apply the lemon juice on the mildew affected fabric. Scrub off the mold stain.
