Mix up enough mortar for 30 minutes use.
Repair hole in exterior brick wall.
Some holes pass through the mortar joint while others penetrate through the brick itself.
This is a critical step because dry materials will suck the moisture out of the new mortar and prevent it from curing properly.
The consistency of this layer of plater patch should be like peanut butter.
Wait until the next day before filling the joints.
Mist the wall with water until the brick is thoroughly damp and starts to drip.
Apply your plaster patching compound to the hole.
Slowly add water until the mix is stiff enough to form a ball.
New brick buildings are of course built with newer products that combat the issue one of the more popular is a plastic brick sized insert that replaces bricks every few feet or so.
These have hundreds of tiny holes in the face to allow the brick to breath and stopping all rodents and all but the tiniest of insects to enter the walls.
This is the rough in coat so the surface of the patch should be a bit below the surface of the wall and does not need to be sooth.
If your plaster walls get cracks dents or holes consider repairing the plaster rather.
Repair methods vary depending on the size and location of the hole.
The mix should stand without collapsing or slumping.
